Liberty Star

Liberty_Star_PalmsEach day your Virgin Islands sailing vacation will begin with a hearty, home-cooked breakfast upon those famous waters.  You’ll have the opportunity to help the crew sail the ship by raising sails or even taking a turn at the helm under the careful supervision of our experienced US Coast Guard licensed captain. The Virgin Islands were made for sailing, you will get underway for a new beach or port each day, sometime two a day!  When our schooner is anchored, you will have access to our two-person kayak, paddleboard and ample snorkeling gear. There is plenty of seating on the deck of our tall ship, and you’ll always find a quiet place to relax and enjoy the sailing.  There is a bar service for beer, wine and cocktails.  Each night you will be at anchor, for dinner in the salon, and for a restful night’s sleep aboard this beautiful schooner.

Join the Tall Ship LIBERTY STAR in the Virgin Islands for a windjammer experience that will change your view of small ship cruising forever.  We sail through the islands with a maximum of six guests and a crew of three ensures you will feel both special and pampered while aboard our classic wooden schooner.

Take the wheel of our Tall Ship at any time and feel the power of sail driving 50 tons of wooden magic, through the world famous British Virgin Islands.  Set your cup of coffee on the cabin top in front of you and feel the trade winds in your face and the occasional salt spray from a gentle wave to compound this experience.  This is true small ship cruising and sets it apart from any other cruise you have taken or will ever want to take again.  Whether you are at the wheel or rising from your private cabin, the smell of coffee, bacon, and fresh baked muffins will start your day of sailing, snorkeling, or exploring another remote island or beach before heading inland to explore during your windjammer vacation.

The schooner LIBERTY STAR is a 67 foot, traditionally-rigged gaff topsail tall ship with 2,500 square feet of sail.  She was once chartered by National Geographic to research whales in waters off of Central America. She is a beautiful Maine-built wood-hulled schooner designed for intimate cruising with just 3 cabins accommodating 6 passengers and carrying only 3 crewmembers; A Captain, Cook and Mate.  She has a diesel engine for auxiliary power, and a generator for electrical power.  With an awning, and air conditioning you are sure to be cool and comfortable on our tall ship.  Your cabin is outfitted with linens, towels, and even beach towels. The LIBERTY STAR was designed for comfort with beautifully varnished wood paneling, fresh air ventilation and comfortable bunks that rock you to sleep under way or cradle and soothe you to sleep while at anchor on your exclusive windjammer vacation.

Built in 1982, the LIBERTY STAR is a classic, wooden schooner styled after the well-known Coaster class.  She has been carefully maintained and upgraded over the years to ensure an authentic sailing experience in comfort and safety.  This is an American built, owned and operated vessel.  She is routinely inspected by the United States Coast Guard.  Our Tall Ship schooner is crewed by a Captain, Cook, and Mate with extensive experience.  Our crew will welcome you at the halyards to raise the sails or at the wheel to steer the ship.  Hands-on or hands-off, it’s your choice.

With the optional “drink pass” for the week, this becomes an all-inclusive vacation that covers three fabulous, wholesome meals a day served family style, plus snacks and treats , bottled water, soft drinks and all other beverages as well as a fully stocked bar with a friendly crew member serving as your bartender.

Every morning, the Captain will discuss the best port of call for the day and any special activities planned.  Then, it’s off for another fabulous windjammer sailing adventure in one of the most popular sailing areas in the world.  The Virgin Islands offer many choices for sailing and island hopping.  Lunch may be served on deck or down below.  A picnic, set up by the cook and mate, on a remote island beach is always a popular option.  We often stop at noon for some snorkeling or to explore an island, beach or secret spot before we raise the sails again and head out for another glorious afternoon of sailing.

On your windjammer vacation, the schooner LIBERTY STAR sails each day and anchors out every night, as we island-hop to explore the exciting and special Virgin Islands, which may include legendary locations like:

  • NormanIsland – Pirate Ship “Willy T” – all the music you want if you want it!
  • Virgin Gorda – a must stop at The BATHS
  • Marina Cay – An Island filled with music and fun and Pussers Rum
  • CaneGardenBay – visit and taste the rum from a 250 year old distillery
  • Jost Van Dyke – swim in the Bubbly Pool!
